Making an Insurance Claim

In the unfortunate event that you need to make a claim under your insurance policy we would provide the following advice:

Motor Insurance

  1. Any incident which may arise in a claim should be notified as soon as possible to your Insurers, most insurance companies operate a 24 hour help line number which will be provided in your policy booklet.
  2. If any other vehicle or property is involved in the incident you should provide the owner with your name, your insurance companies name and your policy number. You should also obtain this information from them. You should not admit any liability at this stage as this could affect your Insurers position when handling the claim.
  3. Most Insurers have recommended approved repairers in the area and should you not wish to use these repairers they would request two estimates from different garages. We would therefore advise that you do not take your vehicle for repairs before consulting your Insurers.
  4. Should the accident have been caused by another person and you wish to make a claim from them then you should keep all receipts for any expenses / costs incurred for which you will be seeking reimbursement. If your policy includes uninsured loss recovery we will appoint solicitors on your behalf who will recover these costs for you.

Home Insurance

  1. Any incident which may arise in a claim should be notified as soon as possible to your Insurers, most insurance companies operate a 24hour help line number which will be provided in your policy booklet. Should your insurers not operate a help line number your will need to contact us to obtain a claim form.
  2. If the claim involves any form of theft you will need to notify the policy immediately and obtain a crime reference number to pass to your Insurance Company.
  3. You will need to obtain estimates to repair any damaged items or written confirmation that the items are beyond repair. If the items are beyond repair you will need to obtain estimates to replace the items. Should they be available you should also forward any original purchase receipts that you may have for the items.
  4. Should the cost of the claim exceed a certain amount (say £1,000 for most insurers) then, rather than obtaining estimates for replacement items, your Insurers will appoint a loss adjuster who will assess the claim and advise your Insurers on the terms at which they should settle the claim.
  5. You should take any action possible to minimise the loss and prevent any further damage from occurring. For example, following a theft the place of entry should be boarded up to prevent anyone else gaining access.

These are just recommendations to be carried out at the initial time of the loss, in any case you should contact us for further details.
